My son has heard about waves at Mavericks beach and wants to stop there on our SF trip in early August - any feedback? Worth seeing then. Better beaches?
Thanks!
Mavericks BeachI wouldn%26#39;t swear to it, but I%26#39;m pretty sure there isn%26#39;t a ?Mavericks beach?. Maverick%26#39;s is a surf shop and a series of incredibly enormous waves that break pretty far out. Competition surfers around the world stand ready to get there at a moment%26#39;s notice when the surf%26#39;s up.
It%26#39;s rumored that the waves can be seen from shore somewhere around Moss Beach. My attempts to see them have failed.

Mavericks BeachHere you go, thanks to Google. Half Moon Bay is reachable from San Francisco if you go south down Hwy 280 and then take Hwy 92 to Half Moon Bay.
%26lt;%26lt;Maverick%26#39;s or Mavericks is a world-famous surfing location in Northern California. It is located approximately one-half mile (0.8 km) from shore in Pillar Point Harbor, just north of Half Moon Bay. After a strong winter storm has occurred in the northern Pacific Ocean, waves can routinely crest at over 25 feet (8m) and top out at over 50 feet (15m). The break is caused by an unusually-shaped underwater rock formation.
Mavericks is a destination for some of the world%26#39;s premier big wave surfers. Very few riders become big wave surfers; and of those, only a select few are willing to risk the hazardous conditions at Maverick%26#39;s. An invitation-only contest is held there every few winters, depending on wave conditions.%26lt;%26lt;
I hope he sees some world class surfers.
If not, come down to Santa Cruz and he can see some pretty good ones at Steamer Lane.
Puter did a great job (as always) describing Mavericks Beach. We like Maevericks to watch the surfers (Santa Cruz is also great to do this.).
Its near Half Moon Bay so you can plan a day trip of it from San Francisco
Drive from San Francisco to Mavericks Beach and Half Moon Bay. Enjoy lunch perhaps at Half Moon Bay Brewing Company

it will be a fun day for your son and you%26#39;ll enjoy it too (its one of our favorite road - beach trips in the area.)
Great info all! Thanks
