Asian Art Museum, Sausalito Questions

I know the answers to this question can really vary but for those who have been to the Asian Art Museum how long should I plan on spending there? Is 2 hours enough to see it all? It looks like because it%26#39;s by the Civic Center I could get to it by either BART or MUNI. which would be the easiest from the Chancellor Hotel?

The last couple of years I%26#39;ve planned on going to this museum and haven%26#39;t made it because there is just so much to do in SF! This year

I decided I%26#39;m going for sure.

Also would you recommend checking out the Sausalito Arts festival?

It%26#39;s going on when I%26#39;ll be there. I%26#39;ve never been to Sausalito and am interesting in checking it out..curious if this would be a good time to see it during the festival. I%26#39;ll be in SF for 4 days.

Open to opinions regarding the festival and Sausalito.

Thanks so much :-)

Asian Art Museum, Sausalito Questions

To get to the Asian, walk down Powell to Market St. and catch a #5 Fulton bus. This line stops on the curb, not on the islands, so you%26#39;ll need to turn left at the cable car turnaround and catch the bus mid block. You could also catch the #38 to Geary and Larkin but the neighborhood isn%26#39;t as tourist friendly.

Can%26#39;t comment on the Arts festival but Sausalito is a nice side trip. Especially on Saturdays because you can stop at the Farmer%26#39;s Market before boarding the ferry to Marin.

Asian Art Museum, Sausalito Questions

I would say that 2 hrs. will be on the minimal side at the Asian Art Museum, unless you want a walk-thru rather than time to contemplate and focus on specific artwork. We usually go to see to special exhibition and spend 90 min. to 2 hrs. just on that. Seeing more and visiting the museum shop can add more time. I agree that Sausalito is a beautiful and interesting place to visit. It%26#39;s a small community and you can walk around town and the waterfront easily. If you%26#39;re the type of person who likes activity, the festival could definitely enhance your visit. If you prefer a relaxed peaceful time, it may be too crowded. The ferry trip over from the Ferry Bldg. to Sausalito and back is one of the highpoints--great views of all the landmarks and lots of fun!

Thanks for the great info..I thought 2 hours might be on the short side. I%26#39;d thought about going the day I arrive. But my flight gets in at 1:40 so I thought the earliest I could be there was by 3pm and they close at 5pm..I%26#39;ll just go the next day. I just wanted to make sure to work it in. I%26#39;m really considering the festival. That and the ferry ride both sound great.

Thanks again to you both!

The Asian is open late on Thursdays. They were really crowded at night when the museum first opened but I don%26#39;t know if that%26#39;s still the case.

Since we%26#39;ve had kids, our rate of movement through museums has gotten a lot faster

Thanks eephus! Although I%26#39;m a kid at heart I won%26#39;t have any kids in tow :-) I can%26#39;t even imagine bringing my little nephews to a museum, unless it was a natural science museum to see the Dinosaurs which are their favorite thing at the moment.

I%26#39;m looking forward to being in SF. Thanks for your help!

A little late on this one but...

My husband and I visited SF two years ago over Labor Day weekend and went to the Sausalito Art Festival one day - Sunday, I think.

Pros - gorgeous, high-end art (none of that mass-produced stuff) and excellent music. Fantastic music quality (check their website for entertainment schedule and plan according to what you want. When we went we saw ';classic rock'; bands Eric Burden and the Animals, and War. Both were excellent. This year I noticed Jefferson Starship was playing one day, but some of the other acts are more country and not my style. Food and drink were also great - expensive, but not overly priced for what you got.

We took the ferry and enjoyed that a lot - unfortunately it was very foggy in the morning so couldn%26#39;t see much, and I developed a 24 hour bug during the day and so the ride back I had a raging fever and a killer headache so I didn%26#39;t notice much! But that said, even being sick I enjoyed the festival and the ferry.

Cons - very crowded. The emergency station wouldn%26#39;t give me or sell me an ibuprofin, and we were stuck there at the mercy of the ferry schedule when I got sick. ;-(

Don%26#39;t get sick and you%26#39;ll love it, if you like fine art and good music!
