Hey,
We are coming to LA in August. We have a choice of staying at the Oakwood Corporate apartments in Marina del Ray or a vacation rental in West Hollywood.
Can anyone offer any advice as to their personal opinion on the areas? I can%26#39;t find any reviews anywhere on the Oakwood apartments - the two reviews on Trip Advisor are old and cant find any recent news on them - has anyone stayed here or know what they are like?
Also, can you offer any advice as to which area is safest - this is my main priority. I know that nowhere in the world is completely safe but I want to be able to avoid it, if I can.
The Marina del Ray place is between the ocean and the marina and the West Hollywood rental is near the corners of N San Vincente Blvd and Santa Monica Blvd. Is the West Hollywood rental in a safe, upscale part of West Hollywood????? Can anyone please give their honest opinion on what they think is better.
What we want to do will be closer to the West Hollywood rental but I have no problems driving the distance from Marina del Ray if this is a safer area to stay.
Thank you so much!
West Hollywood Vacation Rental HelpThey are equally safe - both very safe. The Marina is very remote, I don%26#39;t recommend staying there. West Hollywood is in the heart of LA, easy to get everywhere.
West Hollywood Vacation Rental HelpOakwood is a huge ';corporate housing'; provider. They have been in business a long time and have an excellent reputation. I have never been in the MDR property but I lived in the complex that is next to it for 6 years. I have also stayed in another Oakwood Property -- their one on Barham Bl in Toluca HIlls and it was very nice). MDR is TOTALLY safe and has a pleasant exposure overlooking the channel (although the Oakwood has no views of it).
Regarding the West Hollywood location, since I live in West Hollywood and work here, I can fill yuo in on the details. The corner of San Vicente Bl and Santa Monica is an interesting one, indeed.
First, it is extremely safe in this area. Here%26#39;s why:
1. The West Hollywood Sheriff%26#39;s office is on the southeast corner of this intersection.
2.On the other three corners and on adjacent streets are some of the most popular gay bars and clubs in the city. In short, this is a lively neighborhood with lots of people out in the streets, eating in the restaurants and going in and out of the bars and clubs.
As far as it being ';upscale';, as an estate agent, I can tell you that property values are high here. One bedroom condos sell for about 1/2 millton dollars. The corner of San Vivente Bl and Santa Monica Bl is 3 blocks south of the Sunset Strip which you could walk to (although the road is upsloped). The Strip features restaurants, bars and trendy clubs.
Staying in West Hollywood is a lot more central than Marina del Rey, of course. The rental you are looking at is probably in one of the nearby condo buildings although there are a handful of single family residences also in the area.
Perhaps, the Oakwood on Barham in Toluca HIlls would be an option for you. It is just north of Hollywood.
Giood luck!
Warning about Oakwood in Marina Del Rey...
They have a habit (and admit to it) of bumping reservations for short term stays (less than one month). You%26#39;ll get there and they%26#39;ll tell you they overbooked the property - sorry! They have also raised their nightly rate AFTER a contract was signed and deposit paid. Said they decided to change the time frame that THEY considered high season vs. low season - and it was a $50 per night difference.
Bottom line, stay in West Hollywood. Better vibe anyway.
