Need Highway 1 help - URGENT

Thanks so much!

streight through driving would be about 15 hours. the point of driving hwy 1 is to take your time and enjoy the awe inspiring views. this way will take 2-3 days.

This will be a long trip, and once you hit the Los Angeles area, you%26#39;ll be on the city%26#39;s freeways (and San Bernardino county%26#39;s) with whatever traffic issues might come up at the time. As in any metropolitan area, the mileages are just numbers because they seldom reflect real-time travel conditions.

Here%26#39;s one sample route. From San Francisco to Santa Monica is about 470 or so miles on Hwy 1. If you turn east there on I-10, it%26#39;s 60 miles of lovely L.A. freeway traffic to Ontario, where you catch I-15. You%26#39;ll go through a little of the San Barnardino urban area and then outto Barstow, from where you%26#39;ll continue on I-15 to Las Vegas. The distance from the Ontario area to Las Vegas is 240-250 miles.

If you have the time between Barstow and Las Vegas, make a side trip to Death Valley if you have not already been there. It%26#39;ll help clear up any sour taste left from smog, crowds, or urban freeways.

* ';San Barnardino* ';

Apologies to San Bernardino. It is not a barn. :)

Why not take Hwy 1 to San Luis and then cut over LV via Bakersfield %26amp; Barstow? It would save time and the most scenic part of Hwy 1 is from Carmel south to San Simeon / Morro Bay. It%26#39;s about 420 miles from SLO to LV gong this way and the traffic will be better then what you will find in LA. I would guess about 11 hours total driving time.

I%26#39;ve always been told to take Hwy 1 going north, as that way you are in the inside lane-and the outside lane is far scarier. Is this just true north of San Francisco, or also going south?

Scary is a state of mind, I guess. Some people feel better if they have a mountainside on their right. The traffic lanes on Hwy 1 are wide enough for any passenger vehicle and most commercial vehicles, but it%26#39;s an issue for some folks, or maybe they worry about encountering something wide enough to force them off the side into the ocean.

As for north or south of San Francisco, the ocean is always going to be on the west, and the land stays put on the east. No matter where you are on the U.S. Pacific coast, if you go south the ocean will be on your right, and if you go north the ocean will be on your left with the opposite traffic lane in between.

Excellent!

芦It%26#39;s about 420 miles from SLO to LV . . . guess about 11 hours禄

Much of the route may be found at Driving Directions with links to relevant maps and URLs of places passed through: San Francisco to Pacifica-Half Moon Bay-Santa Cruz-Monterey/Carmel, Big Sur, San Lu铆s Obispo, Yosemite, Los Angeles, and San Diego geocities.com/touringsfo/鈥riveDir.html

I ALWAYS advise taking the water side of any waterside road. For the Shore Line, Cabrillo, and Pacific Coast highways bearing the numerical designation 1, that%26#39;s North to South.

芦[South to North] you are in the inside lane禄

Meaning, of course, that, more often than not, you%26#39;ll have to cross the opposing traffic to visit the view sites and again when you resume your journey. If you want to do that after some slow vehicle with an oblivious driver, you might have to wait for thirty following vehicles to pass thus causing a problem on your side of the road, too. Deplorable, and perhaps dangerous, advice!

If you take Hwy 1 down to San Luis Obispo, you either have to head back north to pick up Hwy 46 East from Paso Robles or south toward Santa Maria to pick up Hwy 166 east to get to the 99 Freeway south or north (respectively) to reach the 58 eastbound and over the Tehachapi mountains into Mojave.

I prefer 166 over 46. You%26#39;ll at least get one last gorgeous view of the Pacific Ocean while driving through Pismo Beach with the 166 choice.
