My husband and I are planning a trip to California in December. Our plans are to fly into SF on 12/14 in the evening, rent a car, stay at a hotel near the airport and drive the next day to Pebble Beach. It is my husband%26#39;s 30th b-day and I am taking him golfing there. We are staying at the Lodge (although VERY PRICEY!) for 2 nts. On the 17th we are driving up to Sonoma (staying at Inn at Sonoma) for 2 nts. Then, on the 19th we are leaving for SF, returning our rental car as close to the hotel as we can (possibly The Orchard hotel?) and staying for 3 nts. Our flight back to Pittsburgh is at 10:30pm on 12/22. We realize that we will have a lot of time to kill after we check out of the hotel and before our flight. Does this itinerary sound okay, or way too rushed? Is the December weather giong to make us miserable for most of our trip? Also, please give any ideas on great places to eat, must-see spots, and also spots that are worth passing up. Oh, and any help with transportation in town and back to the airport would be helpful. Thank in advance for ANY tips and ideas!
Need Opiniosn on First San Francisco TripTierney ?California in December.?
Rain is probable.
?returning our rental car as close to the . . The Orchard hotel?)?
You%26#39;ll probably be able t%26#39;do dat on Mason Street %26#39;tween Post and O%26#39;Farrell Streets.
?Does this itinerary sound okay, or way too rushed??
It%26#39;s not one that I%26#39;d recommend but you seem to know what you want to do.
?Is the December weather giong to make us miserable?
It could. It might not.
?great places to eat?
Monterey%26#39;s Fish House in, uh, Monterey.
?must-see spots, and also spots that are worth passing up.?
Not knowing your tastes or interests, it%26#39;s an unanswerable question.
The ';Don%26#39;t-miss SIGHTS in San Francisco'; page geocities.com/touringsfo/Articles/Sights.html has enough to keep you busy for nine 12.7-hour days. It includes links to your best sources of advice on WHERE TO EAT and, according to the Department of Health, WHERE TO NOT EAT here, the UseNet Group ba.food, and the quite-good sfSurvey and the comprehensive Yelp. It also has a WEATHER CHART with a link to current conditions.
?help with transportation in town?
The FLAG/MAPS page geocities.com/touringsfo/…FlagMaps.html has links to the best on-line MAP of San Francisco, the outstanding WALKER/BICYCLIST map that shows the steepness of our streets. The new version of the formerly superb map created for the San Francisco Municipal Railway has removed many streets%26#39; names making it less useful. It%26#39;s cluttered with our many bus, cable car, street car, and bus routes. There is also a map of our CABLE CAR ROUTES, our 49-mile SCENIC DRIVE, and a superb map of GOLDEN GATE PARK.
?back to the airport?
Ways to get from/to The Airport to Your Hotel may be found at http://geocities.com/touoringsfo/FromSFO.html
Need Opiniosn on First San Francisco Tripweather will be better than Pittsburgh. I love that bridge going to the ball park. I would also check on prices as I think they will drop closer to the hoilday season, be patient.
It sounds great to me, given the time you have available. You have chosen excellent lodgings. Please do a report on Inn at Sonoma here when you get home.
Don%26#39;t think of it ';as time to kill'; before your flight. Think of it as time to see more of San Francisco.
If you are from Piitsburgh then our weather will not make you miserable %26lt;grin%26gt;. Often it doesn%26#39;t even rain here until January, and, if so, not very often or hard. Worst rain months are usually Jan Feb Mar Apr. My husband often plays tennis without a shirt in December. We are 70 miles from San Francisco.
Swing Cha, whom you have already heard from, has a link to what to see in San Francisco. I don%26#39;t remember whether he posted it.
Transportation in town is easy....San Francisco has excellent public transportation. When you get here you will want a copy of the ';Official Map Guide to...'; I think it is Muni....and.... I got my copy at a newsstand, but there has been a recent discussion about this on where to get a copy. Do a search.
Unless you have a lot of luggage you can take BART to the airport for $5.50 each. The Orchard will store your luggage until you are ready to leave You are about 5 blocks from the Powell Street BART Station, but since it will be night I would suggest a short taxi ride and tip the poor driver well.
Otherwise, get advice from your hotel about the best way to get to the airport.
It would be nice if you had more time in San Francisco.
Wow! Golfing at Pebble Beach....I%26#39;m jealous.
It sounds like you have storng interests in each of the places you want to visit (Monterey, Sonoma, and SF), so I think your itinerary suits you just fine. I prefer Sonoma over Napa when it comes to visiting wine country, so I think you made a good choice there. You%26#39;ll also be in SF when Union Square is all decked out for the holidays, which is very nice.
Your trip sounds great to me, and even with a little rain here and there, I%26#39;m sure you%26#39;ll really enjoy it.
