(Sorry, lots of questions!)
We%26#39;re coming over from the UK on the 19th - as that happens to be my fiancee%26#39;s birthday. Given her fondness for shopping and the sales, combined with the strong pound it seems like a great time to be coming (even if the weather doesn%26#39;t hold - we%26#39;re used to rain!)
We%26#39;re staying at Parc 55 - I get the feeling that%26#39;s a good place to stay both in terms of being a good hotel and being convenient for shopping and transport?
Are there any particular things that happen around the area that we might catch at that time? Is there a tree lighting at Macy%26#39;s? I think I read about it somewhere but can%26#39;t find out when it takes place.
We%26#39;re considering visiting Six Flags (we%26#39;re in our early-mid twenties) - it seems to be shut for a while then reopened for Thanksgiving. Do they do anything special? Is it worth visiting in general (and is it likely to be packed because of the holiday weekend?)
I%26#39;m guessing pretty much everything will be closed for Thanksgiving itself? Will we need to pre-book a restaurant on that day because they%26#39;ll be full? (Sorry if that%26#39;s a naive or odd question, obviously we don%26#39;t have Thanksgiving!)
Thanksgiving week in San Francisco - a few questions!
pre-booking a restaurant for thanksgiving feast is preferable. a lot of places have a special menu that day. your choice of the parc 55 is a good one. I%26#39;ve stayed there for in town get-away and liked it fine. thanksgiving day, most everything except restaurants will be closed and some of those will have reduced hours. the following three days, however, are an orgy of shopping, so your fiancee will feel right at home. there is a tree lighting in union square that happens the friday after thanksgiving.
last thanksgiving, I was in London and had tea for my traditional meal-alas there were no pumpkin scones or turkey finger sandwiches.
Thanksgiving week in San Francisco - a few questions!
Thanks for the quick reply. :) Any recommendations for a restaurant - and how far in advance should we try and book?
Six Flags will be open the 23rd, 24th and 25th. The 23rd which is the day after Thanksgiving is promoted as the biggest shopping day of the year. Stores open early and there are special sales. Given the rate of exchange you shopping should be great.
There is a tree lighting, but it is not technically Macy%26#39;s. It is in Union Square which is across the street from Macy%26#39;s. I don;t remember what night they light it. Maybe someone else does. I know that Embarcardo Center, does their lighting the Friday night before Thanksgiving.
Parc 55 is a good location to shopping.
The outdoor ice skating rink at Justin Herman Plaza will be open by then, shops will be decorated, and Santa available for Christmas wish lists (and photos). The Friday after Thankgiving is the ';official'; kickoff for our Christmas season.
The weather is changable, but like you said you are use to rain.
The Saint Francis hotel does a nice Thanksgiving dinner in teh Oak Room, pre booking is a good idea.
Have a great time planning your trip.
Auntie
Great! Had no idea there was an outdoor ice rink. She%26#39;ll love that (I%26#39;ll hold on to the side!)
The outdoor rink is only from Mid November to early January, a special holiday thing.
Skating there is quite an experience. It can get very crowded. But even if you don%26#39;t skate, it can be fun to watch. We usually watch the skaters from a bench on the second or third level of the Embarcardo center. Or from the bar of the Hyatt Regency.
Watching the skaters is part of our holiday tradition,
Did you say you might go to Six Flags on Thanksgiving, or did I misread that?
At the Parc 55, mention the birthday and see if can score a ';high floor corner room';. Seriously. If you can get it you will be blown away by the wrap around view of the city. Serious shopping right across the street.
We were thinking of going to Six Flags on the Monday after Thanksgiving, yes.
Six Flags will only be open, Friday, Saturday and Sunday. It will not be open the Monday after Thanksgiving
