We will be flying in to San Jose 7/30 then getting a rental car at the airport then leaving the city toward SLO.
How long does it take to get out of the city? My husband wants to stop in Gilroy if it is along the way to pick up garlic related treats(smelly!)
Also..we are checking out of the SLO area 8/3 driving up PCH1,and will have to spend an extra night in either San Jose or Santa Cruz. The hotels in santa cruz are very pricey, so thinking of staying close to the airport in San Jose. Is there a town in between the two that would be a better option? My kids want to visit the Santa Cruz boardwalk. Even thought about taking the Felton railroad down to the boardwalk if Felton is closeby.
Our flight leaves the evening of 8/4.
Thanks for any suggestions.
San Jose to SLOIf your plane lands at 730pm, you won%26#39;t actually be on the road until about 830pm after collecting your luggage, rental car, etc. At that point, even on a weekday, it should be smooth sailing southbound on Hwy 101 all the way, past Gilroy, to SLO.
If you drive the speed limit, you%26#39;ll get to Gilroy after about 40-45 minutes of driving south of SJC. Will anything still be open?
8/3 is a Friday. Weekends nights tend to become good deals in the business areas like San Jose. There%26#39;s not many options between Santa Cruz and San Jose. You might find something in Scotts Valley just off of Hwy 17. There%26#39;s some little no-name motels along Hwy 9 near Big Basin (between Felton %26amp; San Jose) and camping of course, but Hwy 9 is kind of slow %26amp; windy. Do you want to go that way?
Felton is not far from Santa Cruz along Hwy 9; but I%26#39;m not sure if any railroad there gets you to the boardwalk.
San Jose to SLOHi- I don%26#39;t know if this would work for you, but you could try the Los Gatos area. There are only a few hotels and most are expensive but this one seems reasonable.

Los Gatos has a nice downtown area, and it is at the base of highway 17- the road to Santa Cruz.
Hi Teesa,
Sounds like a fun trip!
Don%26#39;t know if this would be an option for you, but there are Youth Hostels in Santa Cruz and about 20 miles north of Santa Cruz in Pescadero that is in old coast guard buildings next to a lighthouse. Don%26#39;t know the ages of your kids, but my kids ended up thinking staying by a lighthouse was the coolest thing. They may ';rent'; linens for those that can%26#39;t bring there own and sometimes can get a ';family'; room. Fun also meeting interesting people from all over. And it has a hot tub right on the ocean. Go to AYH website and check it out.
Santa Cruz boardwalk is fun and so is the smell alone driving thru Gilroy. Have a great time!
I am so grateful for all this information!
Thanks and I am going t o look up these choices for lodging! Evryone has been so kind
