I recently said ';I regret to inform you that La Alte?a Market %26amp; Café* is no more. There%26#39;s another, “Bahia” at the same location';.
We had the time so dropt in to the near-empty venue. The Italian restaurant across the street that has gotten consistently tepid reviews was packed.
Although we ordered a whole fish, it appears that we were served Item 5 under Especialidads: Mariscos al Caribe, $20 and another party got our fish. We took one look at our dish and smiled at the error.
By the time we%26#39;d devour%26#39;d it, including every grain of the black rice (octopus ink), we were beaming with delight!
We were absolutely blown away by the fabulosity of what we were served . . . that someone else had ordered. THEY got our whole fish.
In addition to what we ordered, we were served an amuse that was wonderful and the bread%26#39;s presentation was unlike any we%26#39;ve ever had.
I asked every party who had eaten while we were there about their meal. ';Wonderful'; and ';excellent'; and ';fabulous'; were shamelessly expleted.
She says ';It%26#39;s one of the better restaurants . . . the food is so different . . . so delicious!';
Next morning, the first words I heard were ';What a great meal!';
We no longer lament the loss of La Alte?a Market %26amp; Café*. I hope that you will go to Bahia in numbers and frequency great enough to keep it open.

LA ALTE?A MARKET %26amp; CAFé
. . . is at 3239 Twenty-second Street (MIssion 2-7224). The name above is not what the sign says but it%26#39;s at the corner of Bartlett. It appears to be part of the Taquerias La Alte?a chain but it ain%26#39;t nuttin; like %26#39;em!
I ordered a fish and that%26#39;s what I got, head t%26#39;tail, and it was goood! I also got a large quantity of nicely prepared vegetables that included broccoli, carrots, string beans, and onions. I also had a very nice soup.
She had a simple but excellent salad and what I%26#39;ll call Pecho de Pollo Colorado that was excellent in quality, delicious, and enough for me to have some of it for breakfast. It was also accompanied by a very generous serving of vegetables.
Our server, who might%26#39;ve been the boss, was as pleasant to us as she was to look upon. She also tended the bar. Since we were the only diners %26#39;til shortly before leaving, the service was fine. I suspect it woulda been, anyway. The place seems to have a capacity in excess of a hundred.
We who have travelled Mexico know that Caribbean-style food is the norm in the Eastern states, particularly Veracruz. It is the cuisine of Veracruz of which I was pleasantly reminded.
Our server asked, when she returned the check in an amount that made the meal an extremely good value, ';Was everything OK?'; “We%26#39;ll be back!”
On our way out, a Rumba was playing that she insisted we dance. We got a nice hand from the people at the bar and the couple at table. I said, loud enough for all to hear “That was with a purse, shoe and food bags, and [because my back was out] a cane.”
We have been back and equally pleased.

SwingCha pleaded ?I hope that you will go to Bahia in numbers and frequency great enough to keep it open.? but you apparently did not heed that plea, BetterthanBings having admitted so in the past week.
There%26#39;s still a restaurant named Bahia at the address above but it is not the restaurant it was. There%26#39;s a new menu with much lower prices, typical Mexican dishes, and a few seafood items but the preparation bears no resemblance to the place that was.
We are saddened to have to hereby withdraw all enthusiastic and supportive comments about this restaurant to a status of neutral, i.e., it%26#39;s now typical with what one finds in The Mission.
Those of us who ate there when we should have have something to cherish.
