thinking about staying in a brand new hampton inn , in van nuys, how is the area , safe,or seedy? any restaurants? what is the commute to Hollywood and Santa monica time wise?
van nuys
First, you%26#39;ve posted your question in the San Francisco Forum but your question is about Los Angeles.
That section is a very commercial area of Van Nuys. Its primary distinction is that is an area with block after block of automobile dealerships. There%26#39;s nothing to walk to except those dealerships, some gas stations, some cheap %26#39;coffee shops'; and low-end ';strip shopping centers';.
It%26#39;s about 25 minutes to both Santa Monica or Hollywood WITHOUT TRAFFIC. During high-traffic periods (M-F: 6:00 to 9:00 and 3:00 to 7:00 and Sun evenings), the commuting time can double.
Consider the Farmers Daughter Hotel which is across the street from the Farmers Market, CBS Television City and the Grove.

It%26#39;s a 15 minute drive to Hollywood (Walk of Fame, Grauman%26#39;s Theater, Walk of Fame) and about 30 minutes to Santa Monica. It%26#39;s also 5 minutes from the La Brea Tar Pits and 15 mnutes to Rodeo Drive. You can walk across the street to the Farmers Market and the Grove (which is open late). It%26#39;s a child-friendly area with lots of shopping and dining options in all price ranges. The Grove is also nice to ';stroll around'; since it%26#39;s set up like a little town with a town square with a clock tower, ';old fashioned'; movie house with a rotating neon column, a fountain that ';performs'; to pre-recorded music and a grassy area where kids and adults ';hang out';.
After linking to the above, click on CHECK PRICES for CURRENT offers on this property (Ignore the AVERAGE PRICE figure).
Here are the websites for the farmers market and the grove.

You need to post this in the LA forum.
commute via what? without a car, it will be hell and will take hours. even with a car, this is not a good place to stay if your purpose is to explore LA and see the sites. you%26#39;ll be in traffic going to any sightseeing areas in LA too since it%26#39;s in a mostly residential neighborhood (the valley). if you want something relatively inexpensive, check out Orchid Suites and Celebrity hotel in Hollywood.
I live around the block from the new Hampton Inn, it is on a very busy street next to the frwy and across from Target. It is not a vacation spot, more of a business stop on your way somewhere else. Commute to Hollywood, 20 min without traffic, 30 min to Santa Monica without traffic, there is always traffic.
