San Fransisco Jackson Hole

Iwant to plan a return road trip from San Fransisco to Jackson Hole, maybe 4 days each way. Is this feasible and what would be the best route.

San Fransisco Jackson Hole

Nosher--post your ques. on the Wyoming Forum as well. I just ret%26#39;d from Jackson Hole, but sInce we flew, I can%26#39;t advise on driving routes, but much will depend upon what time of yr. you plan your trip since weather conditions are mighty unpredictable thru the mountain states. In early Oct. we experienced everything from ';t-shirts and shorts'; sunny weather to snow and below freezing temps. Be sure to build in enuf time to just ';be'; in Jackson Hole to do hiking, boating (if the season allows) and wildlife sighting. We were there for 9 days and still did not do all we wanted to do!

Thank you very much for your reply. Our trip is in the last week in June and first two in July, with the entire middle week spent in Jackson Hole. It seemed a good idea to motor through the mountain states but as a citizen of Liverpool this seems another world. Driving times, avoiding the Interstates are a mystery to us.

Once again thanks for your help

You can probably do this trip in two days each way as it is about 950 miles from SF to Jackson, WY.....7 hours of driving each day with a one night stay in Winnemucca NV, Battle Mt., or Elko, NV. Sounds like a fun trip that my husband and I have wanted to take but never got past the planning stage....hope you all enjoy yourselves! June/July should be perfect weather but be careful driving across the desert and take plenty of water! (On your return trip you might want to stop for a couple of nights at Lake Tahoe)

When I came home from there, it was via the Moon-something in Idaho, probably the Snake River Canyon and the Kleinschmidt Grade, Washington%26#39;s fascinating Dry Falls about which recent research revealed an incredible geological story, to Maryhill with its fabulous museum of art and Stonhenge, thence down the beautiful Cascades visiting the High Desert Museum. It%26#39;s a great trip.

It%26#39;s such magnificent country up there that any route would be memorable.

Lemme make clear, my trip home from there was in the %26#39;60s, I think, suffering from broken ribs and a mangled knee on a motorcycle from an accident within sight of Jackson Hole. The trip was more memorable than the pain. If you were listening to Dave McElhatton on KCBS at the time, you heard me tell about it on the air.

Craters of the Moon? If so, a fabulous, definitely other-world experience. For someone from the UK, especially. Totally volcanic landscape, quite a ways from any ';civilized'; area. Can be very warm in summer. But it%26#39;s certainly worth a side trip.

«Craters of the Moon?»

Yes. Thank you.

Yes, indeed!

Yes. you can do it in two days each way, but if you can allow more time, you will have a more interesting trip. You can go one way and come back another.

You would definitely be interested in the ';Craters of the Moon';. Nothing like you find in Britain.

I used to live in the Jackson Hole area (50 miles south of there) and have driven back and forth many times, on several route, so when I have time, I will suggest some routes and stopovers. Be patient, our house is in escrow and we are getting ready to move and do all of those paper work things, and tomorrow and the next day are packed.

When is the trip?

Whilst crossing Nevada you must have dinner at one of the Basque restaurants. As I remember, Winnemucca is a good first night stop and if you go down by the railroad tracks you should find a Basque dinner house. Lots of years ago we took our children there on a trip across and there was a Basque birthday party going on....fabulous.

Hey, Puter--good luck on getting thru escrow and the whole sales process! Hope you%26#39;re not moving away from Santa Cruz!

I have done this a few times. Three days is reasonable, allows for stops and a bit of sight seeing. Two days means mostly driving.

I live in Idaho and used to live in the Bay Area. Travel across Nevada in the summer is beautiful but be prepared for hot weather. Here a few thoughts for you. Winnemucca is pretty close for a first night stopping place. But, if you do, try Ormachea Dinner House for a hearty Basque meal at a good price. You might want to go further on to Jackpot, NV. It%26#39;s a tiny little town that exists to take your money in the casinos. Stay at Cactus Pete%26#39;s or across the road at the Horseshu. Nice swimming pools and a good golf course if you don%26#39;t gamble. Drive on to Twin Falls and check out the Snake River Canyon. Drive across Perrine Bridge. You might catch some base jumpers launching themselves into the canyon. From there, you can go north to Sun Valley for a look at Idaho%26#39;s premier ski/summer resort. On the way to Sun Valley you will see a road junction for highway 20/26. If you go east on that route, you will come to Craters of the Moon national monument that others talked about. It is stark volcanic landscape which was actually used by NASA to train astronauts for the moon landings. Or, the easier route leaving Twin Falls is on the Interstate to Idaho Falls and on to Jackson. Lots to do in Jackson and nearby Teton National Park. I will leave that to others to advise as I haven%26#39;t lived around there for over 30 years.
