Hey, I was wondering if LA has any %26#39;regular%26#39; neighborhood-type bars. Basically places where you don%26#39;t have to be dressed in the latest hip fashion to get in. Where there is no guest list and the bouncer is there to check ID%26#39;s, not pick and choose who%26#39;s %26#39;good enough%26#39; to get in. Back East, there are a lot of bars where basically anyone could get in, alone for that matter, wearing any type of clothing, and not having to worry about being on the guest list.
I%26#39;m not looking to get into the latest hot spots, just looking to go out for a few drinks at the bar. Do these places exist? LA seems more like a club city than a bar city. But maybe I%26#39;m mistaken? If no one can think of any specific establishments, are there any ';bar districts'; where you can go from bar to bar throughout the night? Thanks so much!
Does LA have any ';regular'; bars?
There are tons of them. Where are you going to be?
Does LA have any ';regular'; bars?
Yes, there are lots of them, but they don%26#39;t get any publicity b/c they are just regular bars. What area of town are you looking at?
Both Old Town Pasadena and Santa Monica have areas where there are several low-key bars all on one street or within a few blocks. As do Long Beach, Belmont Shores, Huntington Beach, and Seal Beach. About the only dress code most would have would be no ';gang'; attire--baggie pants, sometimes they say no baseball hats.
Hey thanks. Any advice on Santa Monica or Pasadena would be great. I love both of those areas! Also, since I%26#39;ll be staying in the Valley, anything along Ventura Blvd or in Burbank?
There are regular bars along every street. In Santa Monica, just walk up and down Main Street and take your pick. On Wilshire, in West LA, there are many clustered between 20th and 26th.
If you are ever in my neck of the woods, there are some great bars/pubs over here. I am Mt. Washington. There are also some great low key bars in Hollywood, if that is closer to you. pm me and I will tell you.
There isn%26#39;t as much in the valley as in some other areas, but you can find dive bars pretty much everywhere. There are a few along Ventura Blvd in the valley. Where in the valley will you be staying and will you be driving to them?
If you%26#39;re interested in other areas, there are tons of bars like this in Hollywood, West Hollywood, Santa Monica, Venice, etc.
A great site for you to check out would be www.yelp.com. It has reviews for all types of bars and you can narrow them down by neighborhood.
Downtown LA :
1) Bonaventure Hotel - Circular Bar with views of Los Angeles
2) Wander down the street to Standard Hotel - good bar scene on tope of the hotel.
3) Wander over to the Omni Hotel for piano music and drinks....
Pasadena
1) Start out with a glass of wine at Red White and Bluz Jazz Club
http://www.redwhitebluezz.com/
2) Go to Crown City Brewery for a beer
http://www.crowncitybrew.com/
3) Wander over to Gordon Biersh for a beer

(Note: There are lots and lots of places in Pasadena where you can go for a drink and be casually dressed. Only a few ...to avoid...the club scene and you can tell these by the long lines. Just walk by.
Avoid Hollywood area - that is more club oriented.
mini, some places you mention don%26#39;t fit his requirements. You definitely need to look nice for The Standard for example.
There are a bunch of places in Hollywood where you don%26#39;t need to be dressed up either such as Big Wangs, Star Shoes, Beauty Bar and a bunch of others around Cahuenga. It%26#39;s not just clubs. Same with Main Street in Santa Monica. There are definitely a bunch of bars there like O%26#39;Briens where you can hop bars without issues.
Mini - your downtown suggestions, while they%26#39;re nice bars, are definitely not ';regular';. Those are bars with extremely high priced drinks, and dress codes.
He%26#39;s looking more for places like Boardners, or O%26#39;Brien%26#39;s, or The Brig.
