We are flying in from Australia, via New Zealand to San Francisco Airport. Sometimes, our 2 1/2 yr old can be fussy with eating. I wanted to know if we were able to bring with us canned spaghetti, plastic tubs of pureed fruit and vegemite, can anyone advise if these items are ok to bring into USA. Thanks in Advance

This food you are bringing is also sold here. If the items are canned or sealed in jars/tubs from a grocery store, you should be fine. It%26#39;s the fresh fruit and vegetables they worry about.

Grocery stores such as Safeway will sell these items so you can find these stores in many neighborhoods. If you are interested, go to www.safeway.com and search by zip code.

As before mentioned, you can find pureed fruit and canned spaghetti in San Francisco at many of the local grocery stores. The only item that I you%26#39;ll have a more difficult finding is vegemite. My toddlers are picky eaters as well so I know how important is to have back up food. There is a Safeway located on Church Street (can take the Underground MUNI a few stops from Powell Station) and one in the Marina district. Safeway also now delivers if it%26#39;s more convienent for you. Here%26#39;s the url..http://shop.safeway.com/register/?kc=False. My guess is that you can also find canned food items at Walgreens and Rite Aid located near Union Square as well.
Opps..type - sp -convenient. Typing too quickly.
Bristol Farms and the Whole Foods on 4th are other grocery options in the general vicinity of Union Sq.
...though I%26#39;m not sure how easily you will find Vegemite here in the US.
Just looked up Vegemite and learned something new as it%26#39;s not a staple in the US.
First, look at the following site
www.snopes.com/food/warnings/vegemite.asp
Also some info on chowhounds.com
Also found the following store in San Fran(Nob Hill area) which has Vegemite in it%26#39;s catalog
Australia Fair
700 Sutter Street
San Francisco, CA 94109
Phone: (415) 441-5319
Fax: (415) 441-4078
Toll-Free: 1-800-399-5313
Hope that helps. Have a great trip!!!
Vegemite is available in most California markets. Expensive and in that smallest size jar. My family can go through that jar in a single afternoon.
Safeway carries vegemite ...
I wonder if there are any customs or agricultural regulations that apply to your food products coming in. As the #1 agricultural producing state in the U.S., California is very protective in trying to keep out anything suspect. Not that canned or processed foods would be a problem, especially new, factory-sealed containers, but the question does come to my mind. Even when driving across the Nevada or Arizona state line. we (including CA residents) have to go through an agricultural inspection station.
You might want to contact the U.S. embassy or consulate in advance, to see what they know or can find out.
Maybe your little one would like to try some of the fresh-made spaghetti or other pasta choices in San Francisco%26#39;s Italian restaurants! Pureed foods of all kinds are available in grocery stores, in a separate aisle labeled for baby food. The larger chain drug stores like Walgreen%26#39;s or Rite-Aid also sell them.
Feeding children vegemite has been declared illegal in 35 states but I%26#39;m not sure about California.
