Traffic 1 Jan
There shouldn%26#39;t be any traffic on Jan 1 in the morning, but you cannot anticipate if an accident might occur that would cause traffic.
For an 11:30 flight, and having to return a rental car, leave your hotel at 9:00 AM
Traffic 1 Jan
Traffic should not be bad, but I must warn you that at LAX, Southwest has THE WORST LINES in the airport. Especially on Holidays. They can run outside and down to the next terminal. So I would plan on extra time just to check in and get through security.
There should be zero traffic and relatively few passengers at LAX, as 1/1 is not a big day for flying.
You can find out how far it is on your own:
maps.google.com
As far as the time, I like to work backwards. You should get there an hour in advance. That%26#39;s 10:30. Then you have to drop off the car and get to the aiport. Let%26#39;s say 45 minutes. Now it%26#39;s 9:45. Figure 45 minutes to get to LAX, though it will probably be less. That%26#39;s 9am.
If you leave at 9am, you should make your plane with plenty of wiggle room. 9:30am will probably get it done, though I wouldn%26#39;t leave much later than that. See if the hotel will print out your boarding passes for you.
It will be a big travel day, since a lot of people have to be back at work on Wed the 2nd, many will be flying home that day.
I flew Southwest OAK to LAX the day after New Year%26#39;s last year to be at work the next day. Both airports were almost empty. It is actually a cheaper day to fly on many airlines because it doesn%26#39;t sell well. You shouldn%26#39;t have problems at the airport. You should also check in for your flight the day before (up to 24 hrs ahead) online. That way you%26#39;ll get into the first boarding group and won%26#39;t have to worry about checking in once you get there. Plus, any time there is a line and you feel like you may miss your flight, just go up to the front and someone will walk you through. They even usually walk down the line pulling people whose flight is leaving within 30-45 mins, so that they don%26#39;t miss it.
Thanks
Good advice about checking in online, beforehand although we will still need to queue to check in our bags won%26#39;t we

';It will be a big travel day, since a lot of people have to be back at work on Wed the 2nd, many will be flying home that day.';
Can anyone provide a source for this information, or is it purely speculation?
Sorry, but I need to jump into this post. We are also flying out of LAX on the 1st. I think it is around 7:00 or 7:30am (very early) If we check in from our hotel, do we still need to stand in line to check our bags? We are flying Delta. Any advice is appreciated. Thanks!
Yes, you still need to check in your bags, stand in line. But it%26#39;s always good to check in online, and have your boarding pass, so that you know you%26#39;re on the flight, in case it%26#39;s oversold.
amtw, as stated above, yes, you have to wait in line.
However, I expect the airport to be deserted early 1/1. The only people who will be there are people who a) don%26#39;t indulge in 12/31, b) don%26#39;t care about the Rose (and other) Parades and/or c) don%26#39;t care about college football.
Let us know the attendance at the airport, one way or the other.
