Labour Day 2008

Hi,

We are travelling to San Francisco next year as part of a 5 week holiday along coastal California. We are trying to decide if we will arrive 27 Aug or if we would be better to wait until after Labour Day on the 1st Sep.

We thought by leaving late Aug or early Sep we would avoid most of the summer school break and therefore most places shouldn%26#39;t be too busy.

How busy are things around San Francisco that week before Labour Day? We plan to stay for around 7 days before heading north, and want to fit in as much as possible without being slowed down by long queues or masses of people.

Thanks

Thanks.

Labour Day 2008

Because it appears you have a choice, you ought to visit this country after Labor Day.

Labour Day 2008

My experience has been that those last two weeks in August are like the eye of the storm. True summer has passed, the kids are back in schools and those who wait for labor day to be over are not out and about on vacation yet. A nice lull.

Then labor day hits!

A note about Labor Day weekend and being in SF. This is one of the holidays where many of the locals all get up and go out of town. (traffic is so notably reduced that the labor day weekend is one when caltrans will shut down a bridge if needed for road work)

So, out of SF will be busier than in SF, though both will be hopping.

Have a fun planning your trip.

In general, August is the busiest tourist time of the year. After Labor Day, when the kiddies go back to school, the crowds ease somewhat.

Are you planning on heading north up to the Oregon coast?

Since many schools return to class before Labor Day these days, it is less of a factor than it used to be, but I would opt for after. The weather also improves as you get closer to Fall. It will still be somewhat busy, but less so than August.

Hi Halfbrit,

We will be going up to Avenue of the Giants but that is as far. We had originally thought of flying into Vancouver and then driving down the coast from there via Oregon. However one can only get so much time off work and spend so much money. So decided on flying into San Francisco and back out of LAX after having taken our time driving down to San Diego. Stopping where we want, when we want, for as long as we want.

We are planning on just booking our San Francisco accom and then playing it by ear from there.

Thanks for your help all.

Agree with girasol about the holiday improving closer to fall.

In August, San Francisco near the coast is covered with a thick fog most mornings and nights with some nights becoming bitterly cold. The thick fog is due to the warm inland air meeting the cool sea.
