Driving directions website

Hi all,

Is there a good website for working out routes in California. We%26#39;ve got our acommodation booked, and just want to check out best roads to drive on and mileage.

Thanks in advance,

Most of the following sites allow you to add multiple stops.

maps.yahoo.com

maps.google.com

cool, I%26#39;ll add in our itinery tonight, and see how many miles we%26#39;ve planned!!

As another question, how much is petrol per litre/gallon at the moment? We%26#39;re thinking of hiring a ';full'; size car, and have no idea how much it will cost us to do the trip!

Thanks

Check out this site to know the gas prices:

You should probably allow about $3.50 per U.S. gallon as an approximate amount, as it varies depending upon where you are, and keeps going up. Your rental car will have an automatic transmission, so figure about 20-26 MPG as a rough guide. If you are planning to do a lot of driving, I%26#39;d suggest the more comfortable car. Have a good holiday!

Most of the California coast area and other more remote areas (i.e. Yosemite) are creeping upwards towards $4.00 a gallon.

GoogleMaps is really the superior tool for planning driving trips. I have no idea why anyone uses anything else.

Good morning Mich,

If you are planning any trips to the country side, like Yosemite, be sure to ask your innkeepers for the best routes. We find that these mapping services do fine in cities, but can%26#39;t distiguish a dangerous gravel road from a real highway and send folks all over unmarked areas. While many of us have been working to get improvement, we haven%26#39;t had much success yet. This is the problem with computer generated content, it laks the home inputs that make a difference.

Have a great holiday!

Excellent point, Charlotte.

Here in Oregon the on-line maps seem to show a ';highway'; from Grants Pass to Gold Beach, when in reality this is a narrow, winding, mostly gravel road, which is closed in winter due to snow.

So double check with locals via TA, Mich.

Also, can you buy a map of CA there? Maybe through AA?

The Mapquest, Yahoo, and Google Maps websites are all excellent for trip planning.

A couple of summers ago my wife and I did a three week driving vacation in England and got fantastic point to point driving plans from your RAC website. The American equivalent is the American Automobile Club and they have a similar service on their web site at www.aaa.com
