We will be celebrating our 25th anniversary in April, 2008. We have never been to California and thought this might be a great trip. We would like to stay at a hotel centrally located to a lot of things if possible, because we would rather not rent a car - maybe plan some tours which provide hotel pick up. We picked San Francisco as it seems like a romantic spot with lots to see/do, but are open minded if someone has a better city suggestion. As I said we%26#39;d like to do some tours, but would also love some time to just relax. At this point we are very confused and not quite sure where to start so are looking for some help! Also, just wondering would it be feasible to visit Las Vegas while in California? Oh, and I guess I should mention we%26#39;re thinking about a 7-10 day trip.
25th Anniversary in San Francisco, CA - Need Advicestart your hotel search in Union Square and there should be towards the beginning of 2008 some excellent packages offered by Joie de Vivre (boutique hotels) http://www.jdvhotels.com/, and Personality Hotels:
personalityhotels.com/html/p_special_main.ht鈥?/a>
review the Go lists to get some ideas as well as the San Francisco Attractions pages

you don%26#39;t need a car and there%26#39;s public transit offered in all directions if you use www.smta.com or 511.org which covers how to plan your transit to/from your hotel address to the main attractions
The inclusion of a Las Vegas package could be done for two nights there, if you look at any airline specials on Southwest Airlines or United Airlines. Again, the date is far in advance for any to include April %26#39;08, but find the specials page and sign up for email alerts on those airline sites.
25th Anniversary in San Francisco, CA - Need Advicepg - San Francisco is romance incarnate. Think about at least 5 days here and then go to Vegas if you want lights and glitz. A few days here and you will renew your vows for life.
Hi pglpsl - Congratulations on your 25th! My husband and I celebrated our 25th anniversary in June and also treated ourselves to a first-time visit to California. We spent a week in San Francisco and then rented a car for another week exploring the coast as far south as Big Sur and as far north as Mendicino. We loved each minute of the two weeks. We went in September because of the lovely weather and with kids back at school, there were fewer tourists. This forum will be extremely helpful when you start making definite plans, but If you%26#39;d like to know more about the specifics of our trip, please feel free to contact me through e-mail. By the way, my husband and son spent a week in Las Vegas in July to celebrate their special birthdays. I think you%26#39;ll enjoy both cities. Have fun planning! Renish
Happy 25th.
WIthout a car your combo of Las Vegas and San Francisco are ideal.
I%26#39;d split it 5/5 or if 7 4/3 (San Francisco/Las Vegas).
Union Square is a good area to stay - what is your budget as you can have a nice stay (Chancellor) or stay in an higher end place such as the Ritz Carlton and everything in between.). Union Square is great location to stay for you and its also easy access to cable cars and other local transporation.
To enjoy both spots, its good to know ';what you like to do'; such as hiking, sports (baseball season is openig), fine dining (or finding inexpensive but great dining.), biking across the Golden Gate?
You%26#39;ll find much information already on the forum.
Some of the tours you might want to consider are:
1) Alcatraz or Angel Island
2) Day Trip to Napa/Sonoma
3) 1/2 day trip to Muir Woods, Sausalito and Ferry Back.
The rest of the time I%26#39;d see the sights in San Francisco so you have time to relax and have fun.
For Las Vegas, decide what show or two you want to see.
Many travellers do as you wish. The flight to %26#39;Vegas is quicker than two hours, the direct drive about eleven to cover the 600 miles.
The ';Don%26#39;t-miss SIGHTS in San Francisco'; page geocities.com/touringsfo/Articles/Sights.html has enough to keep you busy for nine 12.7-hour days. It includes links to your best sources of advice on WHERE TO EAT and, according to the Department of Health, WHERE TO NOT EAT here, the UseNet Group ba.food, and the quite-good sfSurvey/Tastyr and the comprehensive Yelp. It also has a WEATHER CHART with a link to current conditions.
The FLAG/MAPS page geocities.com/touringsfo/鈥lagMaps.html has links to the best on-line MAP of San Francisco, the outstanding WALKER/BICYCLIST map that shows the steepness of our streets. The new version of the formerly superb map created for the San Francisco Municipal Railway has removed many streets%26#39; names making it less useful. It%26#39;s cluttered with our many electric bus, cable car, street car, and Diesel bus routes. The map will enlarge and be centered on where you click. There%26#39;s also a link that will tell you how to get There from Where. There is also a map of our CABLE CAR ROUTES, our 49-mile SCENIC DRIVE, and a superb map of GOLDEN GATE PARK.
The frequently-updated SPECIAL EVENTS page has irregularly-scheduled music and dances as well as links to seven calendars of regularly-scheduled dances, a composite of five of them, and one of dance cruises and events around the world: http://geocities.com/dancefest/Specials.html The MUSIC section at the bottom of the page focuses on the best of jazz.

Here%26#39;s ';A bit of non-gambling Las Vegas'; with about a dozen useful links: geocities.com/iconoc/Articles/LasVegas.html
My favorite hap%26#39;nin%26#39;s there: The Huck Daniel Revue and Blues Jam in the Stratosphere%26#39;s Images Lounge, Mondays at 22:00. It%26#39;s a blast that%26#39;s been happening since 1988, at the Stratosphere since 2001.
Huck Daniel%26#39;s Celebrity Jam in the Armadillo Club at Texas Station, Saturdays at 21:00. Good floor, few dancers.
A terrific 17-piece band plays at the Italian-American Social Club, on Sahara just past Eastern, Thursdays at 20:30. Nice floor; take a partner!
The Classic Jazz Band (n茅e the Royal Dixie Jazz Band), an excellent sextette, plays Monday-Friday at the Gold Coast from 13:00-18:40. On Wednesdays and Fridays, additional dance space is provided.
Wow! You guys are all awesome! Thanks so much - you%26#39;ve all given me a lot of good information and now I am getting really, really excited about this trip. I have a lot of homework to do, but it%26#39;s good to know that we can make this trip work and that it%26#39;ll be as great as we are envisioning! Just one more thing - our anniversary is 4/23 - is April a good time to visit both SF and LV?
Hi = NYC?
Congrat%26#39;s on 25 years.
Did our 25th celebrating in NYC (Manhatten) the past April (07) and would go back in a heart beat.
If you wanted to do a ';180'; = consider the east coast(?).
10 days in NYC would not be boring - it%26#39;s got it all = we enjoyed Museums, Broadway shows, New York International Auto Show, + + +. Bright lights with lots of unlimited electricity. No need for a car = Grey Line tour bus work great for getting to know your way around + ';transit'; (purchase two day pass and maximize) + subway extremely easy to use, + ton of cabs + walk walk walk for miles with no worries. . . . Jersey not that far away for ';gaming';.
Manhatten extremely safe = beat cops on every corner, literally. Three area airports for ease of access.
We love San Francisco = how about renting a car and throwing in a wine tour for a couple of days? Vegas can get old, quickly, depening upon your interests? Regardless strongly recommend Spamalot in NYC or LV if you are a ';Monty'; fan. . .
Definitely different flavour (NYC) than SF and LV that could be considered ?
For what it is worth, my goal is to sub-let a flat and do a month on Manhatten at some point in the future. There is literally enough to do on that little island to last a month = no need to incur additional air fare costs or lose daze traveling in a city to city move. . .
All the best as you seek venue that affords the ';flavour'; you and your wife seek.
Cheers
Thanks, eastpouce. You%26#39;re right NYC is fantastic - but, we%26#39;ve been there and were looking to do something different. We haven%26#39;t been to the west coast yet!
o.k.
SF is a beautiful city - enjoy the fog horns sounding off the Golden Gate Bridge!
Hey, Frommer%26#39;s has their 2008 book out - may be worth a look?

all the best
April is generally good weather - although you might get a rainy day. (its hard to tell yet...how wet of year we will be having in San Francisco.) Last year April was sunny and nice - a year before that we had one of our rainiest April%26#39;s in history. Normally its nice and wonderful. Las Vegas should be delightful in April. Overall I think you%26#39;ll find the weather good - do bring a coat as it can get cool at night (even if the days are nice.) Again Happy Anniversary! Sounds like a great trip!
