Have car but want to walk or take public transit to Hollywood area, La Brea Tar Pits, Santee Alley, Old town Pueblo area. Metro looks like it will take us downtown but how would we get it at Wilshire? How far of a walk is it to Hollywood %26amp; Highland area?
Also, can%26#39;t find beach area hotel reasonable but am thinking of switching to Travel Lodge on Pico in S.M. for a cheaper and longer stay. How far away would that be by car or bus to these sites? Driving down from SF so want to destress a bit while in LA.
Confused %26amp; want to walk from Elan Hotel to sites
I%26#39;ll let someone else advise you on public transport -
But absolutely do not switch to the Travelodge on Pico!!!! Not only is it a HUGE step down from the Elan, but it%26#39;s extremely out of the way for sightseeing - it%26#39;s barely in Santa Monica, it%26#39;s on the border of West LA, as it%26#39;s on Pico near Centinela and there%26#39;s nothing to do or see nearby. Don%26#39;t do it.
You could add days, or split your stay, by going to Sea View on Main Street, which is a very affordable motel that everyone really seems to love. A no-frills motel, but extremely well-situated. Also be sure to try priceline.com and bid on a 3* or 4* hotel in Santa Monica - many are able to get the Sheraton Delfina for $135 this way.
Confused %26amp; want to walk from Elan Hotel to sites
Thanks Yogachik- I see your advise all over this site. Sadly, already tried that hotel in Manhattan beach- fully booked and also looked at vacation rentals. Teacher%26#39;s salary doesn%26#39;t go far, and with my teenage daughter accompaning me, I%26#39;m cautious where we stay. The uncertainty of Priceline scares me ,though I know many people love it.
Sea Shore (sorry, not Sea View in Manhattan Beach, it%26#39;s in Santa Monica:
tripadvisor.com/Hotels-g33052-Santa_Monica_C…
However, there is a Sea View in Santa Monica that I was thinking of, and it%26#39;s not listed in the hotels here, for some reason. It%26#39;s next door to Cora%26#39;s Cafe on Ocean Ave.
Regarding public transit, take a look at
MTA.NET
Enter the starting point (the Elan Hotel%26#39;s address) and the ending point (a landmark, e.g. LA BREA TAR PITS or an address or intersection -- see the instructions on the MTA.NET site) and the site will give you the route(s) and times.
Regarding transferring from the Elan to the places you mentioned:
1. To go to Hollywood (northeast of the hotel), catch the 25 cent HOLLYWOOD DASH BUS on the corner of Beverly Bl and La Cienega -- just west of your hotel. The ride is about 25 minutes so walking it would take over an hour, I would imagine. If you%26#39;re interested in shopping, you could walk north from your hotel to Melrose Av, turn right and ';shop'; along Melrose until La Brea Avenue (about 1.5 miles). Turn left at La Brea, and Hollywood Bl is about 1/2 mile north. Highland Av is just east of La Brea.
2. For the Tar Pits (southeast of the hotel): #14 bus east bound to Fairfax Av, transfer to any southbound bus to Wilshire.
3. Wilshire Bl has express buses that go into downtown, e.g. the Metro Rapid 720 or its slower cousin the #20. You can either take the 720 all the way into downtown or get off at Wilshire %26amp; Western (you%26#39;ll see a green art deco theater called the Wiltern on the corner) and transfer to the purple line metro rail to the 7th St/Metro Center station. To get to Santee from there, pick up the ';E'; DASH from 7th Street near the metro rail station exit and take it to the Olympic Bl stop. Turn left for Santee.
HopSkipJump- You%26#39;re awesome! Thanks so much for the info. Just what I needed.
